Currituck County’s softball team didn’t receive the luxury of a first-round bye in the state playoffs—but if there were any doubts about whether they belonged among the top teams, the Lady Knights erased them quickly.
Taking on visiting High Point Central, a larger 5A program, Currituck delivered an emphatic response in a three-inning mercy-rule victory that showcased both their offensive firepower and dominance in the circle.
From the opening pitch, the Lady Knights made it clear they would not be intimidated by the stage or the opponent. Despite being matched up against bigger schools throughout the season, Currituck has consistently embraced the challenge, and that mindset carried into the postseason.
The game’s defining moment came in the bottom of the third inning, when Currituck unleashed a seven-run surge to put the game out of reach. Their aggressive approach at the plate paid off all night, as they tallied 13 hits and used every part of the field. The Lady Knights’ lineup consistently found gaps, racking up five doubles and keeping constant pressure on High Point Central’s defense.
While the offense was explosive, the most remarkable performance of the night came from freshman pitcher Abby Tankersley.
Tankersley delivered a flawless outing, throwing a perfect game in just three innings of work. She struck out seven of the nine batters she faced and needed only 38 pitches to complete the dominant performance. Her command, efficiency, and composure in a playoff setting highlighted a maturity well beyond her years.
Already establishing herself as a strikeout pitcher early in her high school career, Tankersley has now recorded 55 strikeouts in 173 batters faced this season. With performances like this, it’s clear she is only scratching the surface of her potential.
Currituck’s combination of timely hitting, depth throughout the lineup, and elite pitching makes them a dangerous team moving forward. Their schedule has prepared them well, having faced a challenging non-conference slate that tested them against high-level competition.
That experience will be critical as the Lady Knights hit the road for a second-round matchup against South Brunswick on Friday night. It’s another tough draw, but if their first-round performance is any indication, Currituck is more than capable of making noise.
Don’t expect them to go quietly.
