MANTEO, N.C. — Rivalry games have a way of bringing out the best in both sides, and Friday night’s 2026 Marlin Bowl was no different.
In a game filled with energy, emotion and determination from both programs, Manteo rallied in the second half to defeat First Flight and claim its second consecutive Marlin Bowl championship.
After a scoreless opening half, the Redskins found their rhythm offensively in the third quarter. Quarterback Drew Brown helped extend plays with his athleticism, while the Manteo defense continued to make key plays when they were needed most.
With 7:54 remaining in the third quarter, Brown connected with Zay Banks for a touchdown to put Manteo in front. Banks continued his standout night later in the quarter, while Jeremiah Gibbs powered his way into the end zone with 4:07 remaining to help give the Redskins the momentum they needed.
Banks was ultimately named the Marlin Bowl Player of the Game after recording his second multi-touchdown performance of the season.
One of the most memorable moments of the night came when Gibbs appeared to suffer an injury and had to leave the field. After receiving attention from the medical staff, Gibbs was able to return to his teammates, providing an emotional lift for the Redskins and the Manteo crowd.
First Flight continued to battle throughout the night and created a late opportunity to make things interesting. With just 31 seconds remaining, Cash Woods helped set up the Nighthawks with their first red-zone opportunity of the game. Manteo’s defense responded with a crucial sack by Kai McGilberry to end the threat and secure the victory.
For Manteo, the win marks back-to-back Marlin Bowl victories and another important step for a program that continues to build under head coach Timmy Charity.
For First Flight, the rivalry provided another opportunity for its players to compete on a big stage and represent their school and community with pride.
The 2026 Marlin Bowl was about more than the final score. It was another chapter in one of the area’s most competitive rivalries, with players, coaches, families and fans from both communities coming together to celebrate high school football on the Outer Banks.
Manteo leaves the 2026 Marlin Bowl with the trophy, but both programs showed the heart, pride and competitive spirit that make this rivalry special.
Final: Manteo 26 First Flight 0
Marlin Bowl Player of the Game: Zay Banks, Manteo
