Northeastern Full Of Youth, Finds Ways To Beat Hertford County

Northeastern's girls basketball team is filled with youth this season, as it doesn’t have many seniors but finds a way to beat Hertford County, but the growing pains of this season look to align and stack a team that is in the midst of rebuilding the program and that only means one thing at Northeastern - and that is growing the culture at its best.

Since the graduation of one of the best if not the best basketball player Jasmine Felton, Northeastern has been looking for the next female alpha to raise up the growing experience for the Lady Eagles in the midst of a developing season.  The Lady Eagles picked up a win over the Hertford County Bears adding a win in conference play winning 52-43;  constantly learning and adjusting to the measure of what it will take to get back to the path of an Eastern regional finals.

The growing athletes continue to shine.  The duo’s of Mia Jones and Zania Gregory continue to carry the workload offensively combining for 15 points per game, getting it done on both sides of the court, while the on ball swarming defense only adds on to the downhill basketball of Jones and Gregory attacking the lane getting to the rim for easy buckets. Mia Jones at the point guard position continues to facilitate the offense, while Gregory cleans up missed buckets on offensive rebounds converting off of 2nd chance buckets.

Those offensive playbooks just grow deeper. Northeastern is currently in 5th place in the Northeastern Coastal Conference. Just at the beginning of conference play, be warned Andre Cherry will have his team at the top by the end of the conference season.

The path so far for the Lady Eagles has been rugged. Northeastern has only beat programs that are below them in classification 3A.

Last night against Hertford County, Northeastern closed the game using different looks defensively to turn over the Bears that converted into easy looks at the rim. Gregory and Jones did their thing, and the Eagles saw additional players step up that will make teams privy of them and spread the floor defensively in the future.

In the beginning of this era, Northeastern is learning how to win the games fundamentally sound, something that is of the utmost importance from Head Coach Andre Cherry in not just having 1 Jasmine Felton, but hopefully a full squad of dawgs in the future.

The bar continues to rise higher. Northeastern will look to clinch its talons on a struggling Martin County team next Friday night in Williamston. As the Northeastern team looks to become the main stay in the conference once again, Martin County presents an opportunity for this team of experience that is loading to get the teams they can while they learn how to slay the giants of the Northeastern Coastal Conference.
