Farmville Central — Wayne Country Day squared off against Crossroads Christian at the MLK Showcase at Farmville Central in a stunning comeback win with less than three seconds to go in regulation.
Wayne Country Day fought back winning against Crossroads 58-56, absolutely stunning the Crossroads Christian squad and fan base in their second one possession game loss of the season and their second hoopstate loss, while Crossroads Christian is now 14-6. It marked win number four as Wayne Country day has been on a four game win streak since beating Parrott on the road.
Crossroads execution from the jump was key, sparking a 8-0 run with 5:46 to go in the first quarter after the spin cycle by Brody Watkins. The game in all honesty would come down to who could get stops on the defensive end as both teams were trading buckets, and who could win on the glass. At the point of halftime, Crossroads Christian had given Wayne Country all it wanted, being up 36 to 29 a three possession lead at the half.
Wayne Country Day had found its momentum per a fiery speech from their head coach.
Brody Watkins was not yet done creating plays as he elevated to the rim finishing the layup and drawing the foul knocks down the free throw with 7:49 in the third quarter, keeping Crossroads cooking. Defenses would clamp down in the third quarter for both teams putting the margin at 6 47-41 at the end of the third quarter. Wayne Country Day’s Marcel Freeman would finally catch some fire and get going netting a pair of jumpers in the third quarter in what would be an absolutely nail biting fourth quarter.
4.4 seconds left in the game for Wayne Country Day to take the lead for the first time in the game, as Jaiden Williams would go to the charity stripe, absolutely swishing both icing the energy and offensive craftiness of Crossroads Christian winning 58-56.
Wayne Country Day’s coach made it clear that the win was big for them per the maxprep rankings used by the NCISAA, with Wayne Country Day surviving the storm of the Cinderella team that was Crossroads Christian.
Sophomore point guard Jaiden Williams was named GMG Athletics player of the game after stepping up in a massive occasion to win the game for his ball club.
Even though Crossroads Christian fell at the end, there is still a lot to play for Crossroads Christian for a conference title and state playoffs coming up.
