Greensboro, N.C. — The 2026 East-West All-Star Football Game will bring together some of North Carolina’s top senior football talent and coaching minds, and Greene Central head coach Jay Wilson will be representing the East coaching staff on December 19 in Greensboro.
As part of GMG Athletics’ Behind the Whistle series, Wilson takes the spotlight as we get to know the coaches behind the game and the personalities, experiences, and passion they bring to the sidelines.
According to the NC East-West All-Star Games, Wilson has been selected as an assistant coach for the East team, where he will work with the defensive backs.
For Wilson, the opportunity is a chance to return to his coaching roots and enjoy the game from a different perspective.
"I'm coaching DBs for the game. That's my roots and where I started at Year 1, so I get to just be the energy guy and have fun without the pressures of being the head coach. But I only know one way to coach, and that's high energy, so that's what I will bring and my shovel."
Wilson has built much of his coaching career on the defensive side of the football. Before becoming Greene Central's head coach, he served as the school's defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator, helping establish the defensive identity of the Rams program.
Now in his eighth season leading Greene Central, Wilson has continued to guide the Rams while maintaining his defensive roots. One of the highlights of his tenure came in 2022, when Greene Central finished with an impressive 10-2 record.
His defensive background stretches back to his playing days at North Carolina A&T, where he competed at defensive back before beginning his coaching career.
That experience continues to influence his approach on the sidelines. Through the Rams' first five games this season, Greene Central has allowed 98 points, an average of 19.6 points per game.
The East-West All-Star Game will give Wilson an opportunity to work alongside some of the state's accomplished coaches while helping prepare a talented group of seniors for one final high school football showcase.
But for those familiar with Wilson, the assignment comes with a familiar ingredient: energy.
Coaching defensive backs gives him the opportunity to return to the position where his journey began, enjoy the experience, and bring the same intensity that has become a trademark of his coaching style.
And, of course, he'll have his shovel.
