Behind the Whistle: Meet East West All-Stars Coach Nate Conner

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The 2026 East-West All-Star Football Game will bring together some of North Carolina’s top senior football players and coaches on December 19 in Greensboro. Among those selected to coach the East team is D.H. Conley head football coach Nate Conner, who has spent more than a decade developing talent and preparing players for the next level.

During his tenure at D.H. Conley, Conner has helped develop several players who went on to play at East Carolina University, including Holton Ahlers, Bryce Weaver and CJ Johnson. Now, he will bring that experience to the East-West All-Star stage, helping prepare some of the state’s top senior talent for one final high school football showcase.

According to the NC East-West All-Star Games, Conner has been selected as an assistant coach for the East team. The opportunity will allow him to work alongside fellow coaches while helping a group of talented seniors prepare for the December matchup against the West.

For Conner, the assignment reflects the same philosophy he has emphasized throughout his coaching career: developing players, building character and preparing young men for success beyond high school.

“I feel like we try to develop a system at Conley that translates to the college level. Schematically, practice style, strength and conditioning, and culture, so if a player works really hard and they have the ability to make it to the next level, they will be prepared for the work that lies ahead in their new program,” Conner said.

“I think our play style will also work well with the East-West game as it is structured to put players into positions to be successful when they do their job. Fast tempo, with balance of run and pass on offense, and aggressive, multiplicity on defense.”

Building a College-Ready Program in Greenville, NC

Conner has been a central figure in D.H. Conley’s football program for more than a decade. Before taking over as head coach in 2015, he spent five years on the Vikings’ staff as an assistant.

Now in his 11th season leading the program, Conner has worked to establish a culture centered on discipline, preparation, strength and conditioning, and character. His approach extends beyond Friday night results, with an emphasis on preparing athletes for the demands of college football and life beyond the game.

His coaching background also includes time at Chowan University, where he served as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division II level. That experience continues to inform his approach to player development and the preparation required to compete at the next level.

During his tenure at D.H. Conley, the Vikings have produced standout talent, including Ahlers and Johnson, who went on to play at East Carolina. Conner’ emphasis on preparing players for the next level has helped shape the program’s identity and its approach to developing athletes.

An Offense Built to Make Plays

The Vikings’ offensive identity reflects Conner’ emphasis on execution, explosiveness and putting athletes in positions to succeed.

Through the first seven games of the 2026 season, D.H. Conley had scored at least 30 points in four contests. One of the team’s most explosive performances came in a 63-39 victory over cross-town rival Farmville Central, showcasing the scoring potential of the Vikings’ offense.

Conner believes that offensive philosophy can translate well to the East-West All-Star Game, where coaches must quickly bring together players from different programs, establish a system and create opportunities for talented athletes to make an impact.

His approach emphasizes tempo, balance between the run and pass, and an aggressive defensive style designed to put pressure on opponents. With limited time to prepare for an all-star game, those principles could help the East establish an identity and maximize its talent.

A Chance to Develop the Next Generation

The East-West All-Star Game represents more than a final opportunity for high school seniors to compete against some of the best players in the state. It also gives coaches a chance to share their knowledge, collaborate with fellow members of the profession and help players prepare for the next chapter of their football careers.

For Conners, the assignment is another opportunity to work with talented athletes and help them make the most of their abilities. His experience building a program and preparing players for the collegiate level will be valuable as the East coaching staff works to bring together a new group of athletes.

When the East and West meet in Greensboro on December 19, Conners will look to help the East’s all-stars showcase their talent and finish their high school careers on a high note.

From Greenville to Greensboro, he will carry the same principles that have guided his work at D.H. Conley: prepare with purpose, play with confidence and put athletes in positions to succeed.
