Written by Christian Bateman

AHOSKIE, N.C. — Northeastern and Hertford County delivered an offensive showdown in a pivotal Northeastern Coastal Conference matchup, but the Eagles ultimately pulled away for a 41–24 victory behind a dominant performance from senior running back Damari McNeill.

Hertford County looked to establish its ground game and keep pace offensively, while Northeastern relied on its playmakers to generate explosive plays. As the game progressed, McNeill's big-play ability became the difference, helping the Eagles create separation in the second half.

Quarterback Zak Ishman added a rushing touchdown as Northeastern continued to find ways to put points on the board. The victory strengthened the Eagles' position in the conference championship race with the regular season entering its final weeks.

Hertford County Strikes First, but McNeill Answers

Hertford County opened the scoring when senior quarterback Rucker Nixon connected with wide receiver Josiah Powell for a touchdown, giving the Bears a 6–0 lead with 7:31 remaining in the first quarter.

Northeastern answered with a special-teams spark. McNeill returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, shifting the momentum toward the Eagles. Mad Max Beal added the extra point to give Northeastern a 7–6 advantage.

The Bears responded in the second quarter when Nixon found Ayden Everett in the back of the end zone with 6:20 remaining. The touchdown kept Hertford County within striking distance against one of Eastern North Carolina's top offensive programs.

McNeill continued to deliver for Northeastern. The senior running back took a handoff from Ishman near the goal line and powered his way into the end zone for another score. With 3:43 remaining in the first half, the Eagles held a 13–12 lead.

Northeastern's defense then came up with a crucial stop, slowing Hertford County's rushing attack and helping the Eagles maintain control heading into the break. Northeastern carried a 21–12 advantage into halftime, putting itself in position to build on that momentum after the intermission.

McNeill's Explosiveness Delivers the Knockout Blow

Northeastern continued to lean on its ground game in the second half, and McNeill rewarded that confidence with another explosive performance.

The senior running back broke free for another touchdown, showcasing the quickness, vision and breakaway speed that made him a difficult matchup for the Bears' defense. His third touchdown of the night helped Northeastern maintain control as the game entered its decisive stages.

Hertford County continued to battle, but the Eagles found ways to answer the Bears' offensive production and preserve their advantage.

McNeill finished with an outstanding 210 rushing yards on 18 carries, averaging more than 11 yards per attempt. His ability to turn routine touches into game-changing plays proved instrumental in Northeastern's 41–24 victory.

With McNeill leading the way and Ishman contributing as a dual-threat quarterback, the Eagles demonstrated the offensive versatility needed to compete for another conference championship.

Northeastern Coastal Conference: Who Will Take the Crown?

Northeastern's victory carries significant implications for the Northeastern Coastal Conference standings as the regular season approaches its final weeks.

The Eagles have positioned themselves to pursue another conference crown, but Martin County and Pasquotank remain important pieces of the championship picture.

Last season, Northeastern narrowly escaped Martin County in a challenging road matchup. Another meeting between the Eagles and Gators could have major consequences for the conference race, particularly if the standings tighten and multiple teams finish with identical records.

Martin County enters the upcoming matchup with plenty of motivation. The Gators were without standout players Chance Matthewson, Jordan Matthewson and Jayden Moore against Currituck following a demanding contest against Pasquotank the previous week.

Despite those absences, Martin County remains a team capable of rising to the occasion in high-pressure environments.

The Gators are scheduled to travel to Northeastern on Friday, October 23, for a matchup that could significantly influence the conference championship race. After a preseason in which Martin County felt overlooked, the Gators will have an opportunity to make a statement against one of the conference's top programs.

For Northeastern, the mission is clear: protect its position and continue building momentum. For Martin County, the upcoming showdown represents an opportunity to disrupt the Eagles' championship pursuit.

With Northeastern, Martin County and Pasquotank all factors in the race, the next two weeks could reshape the conference standings and deliver some of the most compelling football of the season in Eastern North Carolina.
