AHOSKIE — 3A Northeastern Coastal Conference play is underway, and the First Flight Lady Nighthawks made a statement Tuesday night.
First Flight used a strong attack at the net and consistent play from its outside hitters to sweep Hertford County 25-10, 25-21, 25-14 in Ahoskie.
The win moves the Lady Nighthawks to 6-11 overall and 4-0 in NEC play, while the Lady Bears fall to 2-9 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
First Flight came out aggressive from the opening serve, attacking with its hitters and putting pressure on the Hertford County defense. The Lady Bears struggled to make the necessary adjustments as the Nighthawks quickly took control of the first set.
“We definitely had some great swings. We knew where to put the ball, we knew great placements,” outside hitter Joslyn Felts said following the 3-0 victory.
Hertford County responded in the second set, making things much more competitive. The Lady Bears battled throughout the set, but First Flight continued to execute and eventually pulled away to take the set 25-21.
The return of captain Ella Morris has also helped bring stability and communication back to the Nighthawks lineup. With Morris back on the floor, First Flight has found its rhythm and chemistry at an important point in the season.
In the third set, both teams continued to battle, with the Bears executing at a higher level and keeping the game close early. First Flight, however, continued to find openings in the Hertford County back row, repeatedly placing attacks into the corners and out of reach of the Bears' defense.
Felts said Morris' return has made a noticeable difference within the program, while also allowing her to grow into her own leadership role.
“She definitely was good with me being captain, but I have taken this leadership and responsibility and taken it well. They listen to me, and it's great to have a team that listens to me and listens to what I have to say,” Felts said.
The Lady Nighthawks are beginning to find their identity as conference play gets underway. After battling through a difficult non-conference schedule, First Flight is healthy, communicating well and building chemistry at the right time.
First Flight will return home Thursday to take on Currituck.
Hertford County will continue its search for its first conference victory Thursday night when the Lady Bears travel to Martin County to face the Gators.
