Manteo Reclaims Cobia Cup Trophy Behind Alex Reyes’ Two-Goal Performance

MANTEO, N.C. — The Manteo Redskins brought the coveted Cobia Cup back to Manteo on Thursday night, earning a statement victory over rival First Flight behind a two-goal performance from junior striker Alex Reyes.

Reyes provided the offensive spark Manteo needed, using his speed and ability to beat defenders to consistently pressure the First Flight backline.

In the sixth minute, Reyes capitalized on a cross from the wing, finishing the opportunity to give the Redskins an early 1-0 lead. The goal set the tone for Manteo in one of the area's most anticipated rivalry matchups.

Reyes struck again in the 32nd minute, doubling the Redskins' advantage and delivering another blow to the Nighthawks' defense. The junior striker has been on a tear offensively, recording six goals this week while averaging two goals per game.

His recent scoring run has established him as a key offensive weapon for Manteo as the Redskins look to carry their momentum into the final stretch of the regular season.

Thursday's victory also marked Manteo's second win over First Flight this decade. Despite the result, the Nighthawks maintain the advantage in the all-time series, holding a record of seven wins, four ties and two losses.

Conference Championship Race Remains in Focus

While reclaiming the Cobia Cup gives Manteo a major rivalry victory, the Redskins still have plenty to play for in the Albemarle 2A Conference.

First Flight has four conference games remaining as it pursues what could be its 14th consecutive regular-season conference championship. The Nighthawks will need a strong finish to keep that historic streak alive.

Manteo, meanwhile, has three conference games left and is positioning itself for a potential second consecutive regular-season conference championship. Following a closely contested stretch that included a tie, Thursday's victory over its 4A rival could provide a timely boost as the Redskins prepare for the final push.

With the Cobia Cup back in Manteo and the conference race still unfolding, the Redskins have reason to celebrate while keeping their attention on the opportunities ahead.

For Manteo, Reyes' two-goal performance delivered more than a rivalry victory. It gave the Redskins momentum, confidence and another reason to believe they can finish the season on top.
