The Perquimans County Pirates are moving on in the NCHSAA 2A State Soccer Playoffs after delivering an impressive second-half comeback to defeat Henderson Collegiate, 7-5, in the first round.

Trailing 3-2 at halftime, the Pirates found another gear after the break, battling back to force overtime before securing the victory and sending Henderson Collegiate home for the second consecutive season.

“Coming out with two straight wins against the same team, even though it was a shaky matchup,” sophomore Trevor Rountree said following the game.

Perquimans County struck first, capitalizing on an opportunity directly in front of the goalkeeper to put the Pirates on the scoreboard. However, Henderson Collegiate responded with offensive pressure of its own, using speed, physicality, and athleticism to make things difficult for Perquimans throughout much of the opening half.

The Pirates entered halftime facing a one-goal deficit, but the momentum quickly began to shift after the break.

Perquimans came out with renewed energy, displaying improved chemistry, composure, and unity as the second half unfolded. Sophomore Trevor Rountree, who has transitioned from football kicking duties to making an impact on the soccer field, stepped up offensively with two second-half goals to help push the Pirates toward overtime.

Henderson Collegiate continued to answer Perquimans' offensive attack, matching the Pirates' production throughout the second half and keeping the contest competitive.

With the game on the line, Perquimans County ultimately found the breakthrough it needed. Brock White delivered the decisive moment, getting deep inside the box and finishing into the lower corner of the goal to secure the victory for the Pirates.

With the 7-5 win, Perquimans County advances to the next round of the NCHSAA 2A State Soccer Playoffs, earning another postseason victory over Henderson Collegiate for the second consecutive year.

The Pirates' second-half resilience and ability to deliver in the biggest moments proved to be the difference as they continue their postseason journey.
