HERTFORD, N.C. — Perquimans County is one win away from the regional finals after sweeping Research Triangle 3-0 on Thursday night, setting up a highly anticipated fourth-round matchup against conference rival Manteo.
The Pirates earned the third-round victory with three tightly contested sets, winning 25-22, 25-23 and 25-23. With both teams entering the matchup boasting impressive records, Perquimans relied on its composure and execution in key moments to protect its home court and keep its postseason run alive.
Perquimans entered the contest with an 18-5 record, while Research Triangle stood at 20-4. Despite the Raptors' strong effort, the Pirates found a way to close out each set and advance to the fourth round.
The victory improved Perquimans to 11-2 at home this season, continuing a strong run on its home floor. The Pirates have established themselves as a difficult opponent in Hertford, and Thursday night was another example of their ability to deliver when the stakes are high.
After the match, Perquimans setter Eleanor Howell reflected on her development and the opportunity to help lead the Pirates through the postseason.
“It means a lot to me, especially since I have only been setting for two years. I want to thank Coach Thatch for giving me the opportunity to get better at setting throughout my career. I really want the girls to experience a state championship. I want these younger girls to get that experience,” Howell said.
Freshman Aubrey Ashley also made her presence felt, providing a powerful attacking presence throughout the match. Her ability to put the ball away helped the Pirates maintain pressure on Research Triangle as they worked to finish each competitive set.
The win also keeps Perquimans on pace for its sixth consecutive 20-win season under head coach Thatch, continuing a stretch of consistency for the program.
A Familiar Rival Awaits
The Pirates now turn their attention to a familiar opponent in Manteo. The conference rivals will meet at Manteo High School in the fourth round, with a spot in the regional finals on the line.
The matchup presents Perquimans with an opportunity to avenge two earlier losses to the Redskins this season. With their postseason hopes at stake, the Pirates will look to turn the tables against a team they know well.
Howell acknowledged the challenge ahead but said her teammates are eager for another opportunity against Manteo.
“I think our girls are really hyped up. We don’t like to lose, so we want to win. Manteo has a lot of great girls, but we are ready to come back and win,” Howell said.
For Perquimans County, Thursday's sweep was another step toward its ultimate goal of a state championship. The Pirates have navigated another postseason test and now face one of their biggest challenges of the season.
With a trip to the regional finals at stake, the stage is set for another chapter in the rivalry between Perquimans County and Manteo. Only one team will move on.
